Bar Outrigger's Storm in a Glas

History On The Rocks is Goya’s summer cocktail series in partnership with Smitha Menon. Here, we explore the often-unknown origin story behind our favourite classic cocktails. We will also be bringing you a modern take on the classic, from some of our favourite bars in the country. This week, dark ‘n stormy.
What does a sailor, rough winds, and ginger ale have in common? A cocktail, of course!
The story of the origin of Dark ‘N Stormy has its roots in Bermuda. Not the triangle, but the island.
In 1806, James Gosling, the the eldest son of the Gosling family (merchants from Kent) set sail for Amercia. They were unable to find their way and exhausted, docked at the nearest port which was Bermuda. Gosling decided to make hay, or rather rum, where the sun shines and set up shop launching a branded aged rum, sold from the barrel, and called Black Seal.
Now, at the time, ginger beer was used to cure seasickness in the Caribbean; there was even a ginger beer factory set up at the dockyard. At some point, the meet cute between Black Seal rum and ginger beer took place, and the Dark ‘N Stormy was born.
The cocktail is one of the rare ones that are trademarked — in 1991, the family filed and won a trademark on the name.
In Goa, Bar Outrigger has made a name for itself for its maritime theme, its rum collection and stellar drinks. Their version of this rum-based drink isn’t anything simple, it is a cross between a classic Pornstar Martini and a typical Dark ‘N Stormy .
