Rani O'Ranna: Queen of Her Kitchen
In Rani O’ Ranna, artist Rakshita Mittal's debut capsule, she trains her lens on the kitchen, one of the most gendered spaces in India. Through portraits of women in their kitchens, this collection is anchored around a central theme – seeking an identity.
How does a kitchen embody the women working within its walls through preservation of memory, the transmission of knowledge, and through the duty and devotion of a home-maker? Does dominance over the kitchen make a woman powerful, or does it reinforce the lack of control over other spheres of her life? Rakshita’s work transforms kitchens into a synthesis of wider, recognizable themes through the experiences, objects and the memories that live in them.
The Goya Journal will be launching Rakshita Mittal’s debut capsule, Rani O’Ranna, on December 1, 2018, with a multi-course dinner fashioned around the themes in her work. The menu for the night will be curated by Lipi, Bangalore’s ground-breaking ingredient-driven restaurant. Rakshita Mittal is a visual artist based in Bangalore, and works with still images and print media, where she explores the role of narratives in providing information about a place in time.
