Deepavali in Little India
East of the Serangoon River, is Singapore's Little India. Home to traditional Indian commercial and cottage industries, neighbourhood shops, temples, churches and mosques, jostle for space alongside old school spice grinders and grocers. While the Tekka Market is also multi-cultural, catering to produce for Singapore's many ethnic groups, during Deepavali it takes on the shape of celebrations back home. The streets are illuminated, lined with flower garlands, handicrafts, saris and bangles. Shop signs feature peacocks and oil lamps, and holiday treats like barfi, dosa and biryani are on offer. Campbell Lane is shut off to traffic for the Deepavali Festival Market, and just when you thought Mustafa Centre couldn't get more chaotic, it outdoes itself again, busting with festive energy. And on the eve of Deepavali, traditional music fills the air as people join in either dance performances at the stadium, or special pujas at the temple. Bharath Bala shoots for The Goya Journal.
